  • Identify left and right

  • Demonstrate basic motor coordination

  • Maintain seated attention for 15 minutes

  • Respond to verbal or visual prompts

Materials Needed

  • Parked training vehicle

  • Driving simulator or steering wheel trainer

  • Dashboard indicator flashcards

  • Large mirror diagram posters

  • Performance checklists

  • Visual sequence cards

  • Data collection sheets

  • Timer

  • Reinforcement tokens or point system

BST Lesson Flow Structure

Each skill follows:

  1. Instruction

  2. Modeling

  3. Guided Practice

  4. Independent Practice

  5. Feedback

  6. Data Recording

MODULE 1: Mirror Positioning

Objective

Learner will independently adjust all mirrors correctly in 3 consecutive trials using a visual checklist.

Task Analysis

Rearview Mirror:

  1. Sit upright

  2. Look straight ahead

  3. Grasp mirror edge

  4. Tilt mirror up/down

  5. Center full rear window

  6. Release mirror

Left Side Mirror:

  1. Lean slightly left

  2. Adjust outward

  3. See small portion of car body

  4. Center road horizon

Right Side Mirror:

  1. Lean slightly right

  2. Adjust outward

  3. Minimize car body view

  4. Align road horizon

Teaching Points

Explain:

  • Mirrors reduce blind spots

  • Poor mirror setup increases crash risk

  • Mirrors must be adjusted before moving

Modeling

Instructor:

  • Demonstrates full mirror setup

  • Verbalizes steps

  • Shows incorrect vs correct examples

Rehearsal

Learner practices:

  • 3 guided trials

  • 2 independent trials

Use prompt fading:

  • Full physical → Partial → Gesture → Verbal → Independent

Error Correction

If error occurs:

  1. Stop activity

  2. Restate instruction

  3. Re-model

  4. Have learner repeat immediately

Data Collection

Record:

  • Independent (I)

  • Verbal Prompt (VP)

  • Gesture Prompt (GP)

  • Physical Prompt (PP)

MODULE 2: Seat and Steering Alignment

Objective

Learner will position seat and steering wheel safely within 2 minutes without physical prompts.

Task Analysis

Seat Position:

  1. Sit fully back in seat

  2. Adjust distance (knees slightly bent)

  3. Adjust height (eyes above dashboard)

  4. Check pedal reach

  5. Lock seat

Steering Wheel:

  1. Adjust tilt

  2. Adjust distance

  3. Measure chest to wheel (one hand width)

  4. Lock steering column

Hand Placement:

  • Hands at 9 and 3 position

  • Thumbs resting lightly

Safety Instruction

Explain:

  • Too close = airbag injury risk

  • Too far = poor control

  • Poor posture causes fatigue

Modeling

Instructor shows:

  • Correct posture

  • Incorrect posture examples

  • Why correct alignment matters

Rehearsal

Learner:

  • Performs adjustments

  • Holds posture for 60 seconds

  • Practices hand placement

Mastery Standard

  • Proper seat distance

  • Proper steering spacing

  • Correct hand position

  • Maintained posture

MODULE 3: Braking Techniques

Objective

Learner will demonstrate smooth controlled braking in 3 out of 3 simulated trials.

Instruction

Teach difference between:

  • Normal braking

  • Slow stop braking

  • Emergency braking (verbal explanation only)

Task Analysis

  1. Remove foot from accelerator

  2. Hover foot over brake

  3. Press brake slowly

  4. Increase pressure gradually

  5. Stop vehicle smoothly

  6. Hold brake

  7. Release slowly

Modeling

Instructor demonstrates:

  • Smooth stop

  • Sudden braking (example of what NOT to do)

Rehearsal

Use:

  • Pedal trainer

  • Simulator

  • Parked vehicle practice

Repeat:

  • 3 slow stops

  • 2 moderate stops

Feedback Examples

Positive:

  • “Good gradual pressure.”
    Correction:

  • “Try pressing slower this time.”

Safety Rule

Never practice emergency braking with moving vehicles in training phase.

MODULE 4: Signal Usage

Objective

Learner will use correct signals in 90% of simulated driving scenarios.

Instruction

Explain:

Signals communicate:

  • Turns

  • Lane changes

  • Parking movement

Rules

Signal:

  • Minimum 3 seconds before movement

  • Every time direction changes

  • Even in parking lots

Task Analysis

  1. Decide direction

  2. Activate signal

  3. Check mirrors

  4. Perform turn

  5. Cancel signal

Modeling

Instructor demonstrates:

  • Left turn

  • Right turn

  • Lane change signal

Rehearsal

Role-play:

  • Intersection turning

  • Parking lot exit

  • Lane change scenario

Error Correction

If learner forgets signal:

  • Pause scenario

  • Reset

  • Practice again

MODULE 5: Dashboard Indicator Recognition

Objective

Learner will correctly identify 5 out of 6 common dashboard symbols.

Core Symbols

  • Seatbelt

  • Check engine

  • Oil pressure

  • Battery

  • Tire pressure

  • Brake system

Instruction

Explain:

  • Yellow = caution

  • Red = stop immediately

  • Green/Blue = information

Teaching Method

Use:

  • Matching cards

  • Real dashboard images

  • Interactive quizzes

Rehearsal

Learner:

  • Names symbol

  • States meaning

  • States action

Example:

Oil light → Engine oil problem → Stop car safely
